Vineyards and grape varieties
Château d’Agel is made up of 36 hectares of vines located around its cellar. Our vineyards are deliberately planted with classic southern French grape varieties. The viticulture method is organic and each of our vines receives special attention. We put our know-how at the service of each of our plots so that our Mediterranean grape varieties can express all the typicity of the variety and their terroir.
Red grape varieties
SYRAH
A grape variety of French origin, Syrah thrives in the clay-limestone soils of southern France. Intense in color, this variety brings aromas of red fruits and violets, spicy notes and great complexity to the wine-making process.
GRENACHE
A variety of Spanish origin, it flourishes in soils with a pebbled structure. During vinification, it offers power, fruit, such as blackberries, raspberry, strawberry or quince paste, underlined by notes of cocoa and spices.
MOURVÈDRE
A southern grape variety of Catalan origin, Mourvèdre is a delicate variety. It has a tannic structure and a great aromatic richness. Pepper, truffles and black fruits are its main aromatic characteristics. It is used in blends to increase the complexity of the wines.
CARIGNAN
A variety of Spanish origin, it is perfectly adapted to the Mediterranean climate. Naturally rich in acidity and tannins, it gives a well-colored, robust, powerful and generous wine. It offers opulent, rich and varied aromas characterized by red fruit and spice flavors.
CINSAULT
A French grape variety, originally from Provence, it is recognizable by its large red berries with white juice, which can also be eaten as fresh grapes. During vinification, it brings very fruity aromas, such as raspberry, as well as suppleness and finesse to the blend. Cinsault is also often used to make rosé wines.
White grape varieties
MACCABEU
Maccabeu is a grape variety of Catalan origin. Quite rare in the region, we are fortunate at Château d'Agel to have a 65-year-old vineyard, which offers us high quality grapes every harvest. Peaches, pineapple and honey are its main aromatic aromas.
VERMENTINO
Italian grape variety. Its cultivation requires a warm climate and can therefore only be carried out in regions with good exposure to the sun. Vermentino produces delicate fresh wines with aromas of hawthorn, green almond, pear and apple. It brings freshness and personality to white wines.
GRENACHE BLANC
A medieval grape variety originating in Spain, it is particularly fond of dry gravel or pebble soils. Wines made from Grenache Blanc are marked by aromas of Reine Claude, almond blossom, white nectarine, melon and quince. This grape variety produces powerful and warm dry white wines, with fatness and fullness as well as a good length in the mouth.
ROUSSANNE
Originally from Montélimar in the Southern Rhône valley, this grape variety grows very well in chalky, thin and stony soil. Roussanne produces fine and powerful wines.
MUSCAT SMALL GRAINS
A white grape variety of Greek origin, it appreciates poor, stony hillsides and chalky soil. Its main aromas are notes of orange and exotic fruit, but also floral notes such as jasmine and lemongrass
